In recent posts, we have discussed more traditional structured processes for implementing business sustainability plans.  However, an effective plan for long-term sustainability involves more than just defining a vision, creating a strategy, and managing a plan.  Sometimes organizations and individuals need to step outside of the structure and add a bit of spontaneity.

Successful implementations recognize that communication and learning are success factors in the pursuit of business sustainability.  While business and economic growth are the ultimate goals, there is value in the knowledge gained from successful and unsuccessful experimentation.

Here are a few ideas to add spontaneity to your business sustainability plan:

1.    Raise your organizations eco awareness through the propagation of business sustainability information.
2.    Create an open culture to express and share ideas.
3.    Encourage the organization to get out of the office.
4.    Have regular “brown bag” lunch discussions on sustainability concepts defined by the employees.
5.    Create sustainability contests in the office.
6.    Reward creative idea generation and innovative implementation.
7.    Keep internal process nimble with the ability to respond to change.
8.    Implement the winning approaches defined by the organization.
9.    Strive to make sustainability a fun and engaging part of every work activity.
10.    Celebrate successes!

The ability remain open to test new ideas and different strategies will often payoff in the long run and sometimes even equate to immediate business value.  Companies have to sometimes experiment to respond to the changes in the market.
