Celebrating World Environmental Day

image: Wolrd Environmental Day: Act MoreWorld Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th in more than 100 countries.  It is a day used by the United Nations to stimulate worldwide awareness of environmental issues and encourages political action.  Although similar in spirit to Earth Hour and Earth Day, most people are not as familiar with World Environmental Day. As a sustainability consultant, I find it to be a great conversation topic to introduce eco awareness to friends, family, and other soon to be green converters!

In our sustainability consulting, I encourage clients in their sustainability plans to engage and inspire others by engaging friends and family in their World Environmental Day celebrations.  Celebrating the day can be as big or small as you like, but in my personal consulting, I encourage clients to commit to visiting with at least 5 friends and sharing a fun green/ sustainable action they took that day.  The fun part is seeing if that friend will take up the same eco action or at least adopt a sustainability concept that works in their life.

This year, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is using the slogan, "Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy," to make climate change the focus of attention. World Environment Day will provide tools and small business resources to help countries, businesses and citizens of planet earth lower their carbon impact in every facet of life—from energy efficiency to forest conservation to conscious consumerism.

There's only 3 days left before World Environmental Day.  Here are some ideas to take eco action today!

I wonder, for this year's World Environmental Day, how many friends, family members, and co-workers can you inspire to go green?
