- Bless the contrast: Start consciously noticing what it is that you do not want. Make an effort to remove yourself emotionally from it and pay attention to it from a more objective perspective. You may want to jot down notes by topic or subject. For instance, one person may not be happy with their current job. So, do they want a new job or improved work conditions, or advancement opportunities? By noticing what you do not want, you gain insights to what you do want. Focus on getting real specific about it and writing it down helps close that looped thinking that occurs in our thinking.
- Pivot: by now you should have a good running list of what it is that you don't want. It might look something like, "I'm tired of getting these bills", "I'm frustrated with my coworker" , "I can't seem to lose these 5 pounds" or whatever it may be, you now know what you don't want and it's specific. Now, identify what it is that you DO want. Follow your emotions here and notice when you are thinking of what you do want, what feels best to you. So, losing that 5 pounds feels good but why? As in, "I'll feel better in my clothes", "I'll have more confidence", "It would feel great to feel good about myself". The essence of those emotions is your greatest inspiration. In our sustainability consulting, we suggest writing these thoughts down and building upon each statement so each statement is a better feeling thought than the previous one.
- Exclusivity: Focus your thoughts exclusively on the good feeling thoughts about what you want. As often as you can and as long as it feels good and is fun to do, consciously focus your thoughts on the why's of what you are after. Refer to those inspiring notes.
What you focus on expands, so why not get more of what you want. It requires a bit of mental discipline but you have everything to gain. Go for it!
