It seems that most people think of bikes as recreation but in our sustainability consulting to business and individuals, we encourage employers and workers to consider cycling as alternative transportation. This week, May 11-15 is National Bike to Work Week. The week culminates on Friday, May 15 as Bike to Work day. In honor of National Bike to Work Week, we're encouraging our clients to embrace
cycling as part of a sustainable lifestyle for workers and to view bike commuting as a sustainability concept contributing to a business' sustainability plan. For instance:
• On a bicycle you take up little space, burn no gasoline and produce no waste, and a bike can travel 1,600 kilometers (960 miles) on the equivalent energy of a gallon of gas.
• Between 70 and 100 bicycles can be built with the resources required to build one car.
• In a North American urban environment, people can commute by bike in less than one hour (some, a lot less!) Also, a road can carry about three times as many cyclists as people in cars.
