Sales managers and owners of small businesses frequently ask me what are some quick ways to integrate eco awareness in their business. Ideally, having a corporate sustainability plan would be best, but if you aren't quite there yet, then doing something is better than doing nothing.
As a sustainability consultant working with sales teams, one way you can bring business sustainability into your business is by greening your sales process. Some of the benefits of bringing eco awareness to your business include lowering cost, improving your image in the client's eyes, and differentiating your company from the competition.
Consider adopting one or more of the following sustainability concepts into your sales process:
- Paperless Sales: Use email for correspondence; create an e-brochure vs. a printed brochure; and for sales calls and presentations: use a USB memory stick and electronically leave your e-brochure and presentation with your client
- Non Travel: Use video conferencing or WebEx instead of traveling. If travel is required, try a green hotel and public transportation or a hybrid vehicle. Offsetting your carbon offset with TerraPass is an option too.
- Promotional items: Substitute paper items with recycled paper items. Give eco aware promotional products.
Not only will you be selling your products and services but it also gives you more conversation opportunities: how you have brought eco awareness to your sales process, how that effort aligns with the values of your company, and how this creates more reasons and value for your customer to buy from you.
