Revamp your Resolutions

Image: revamp your New Year's ResolutionsWe're halfway into the first month of the year and we're already hearing how those New Year's resolutions have been forgotten.

As sustainability consultants, we view personal sustainability as the ability to sustain growth towards environmental and personal goals.  Oftentimes with our clients, this takes the form of a sustainability plan.  In getting your New Year's resolutions to stick, having a plan helps, but there are also some healthy habit changes that can consistently produce good results.

In our personal consulting, we work with you through all cycles of your development.  So, in this case, if you have already forgotten your resolutions but maintain an eagerness to reach that goal, then give yourself some compassion for where you are and get going again.

First, get specific about your goal.  Maybe it was too broad or you had too many resolutions.  Now that you have had a couple of weeks for your resolution to settle in, consider being more realistic about your approach.

Second, establish a set of steps to help you reach your goal.  Again, be realistic and notice any thoughts in your planning that lean towards procrastination, or pie in the sky thinking that can derail your plan.

Third, take action.  Do what you said you would do as often as you said you would do it.  It builds personal trust and confidence within yourself as well as motivates you towards your goal.

As personal consultants, we see how we all rise and fall in pursuit of our dreams and the trick towards reaching them is not in keeping score with how many times we failed, but as Malcolm Forbes said, "Failure is success if we learn from it."
