Sustainability: Don’t Look Back

image: rear view mirrorWith an ever expanding number of perspectives and view points of the world, it might seem crazy to think a common definition or framework of ‘sustainability’ could ever be defined.  Now add on personal beliefs and business operating philosophies and the conversation continues to expand.   With such disparity, how could anyone ever be expected to decide what they want?

Our sustainability consulting believes that the point of convergence in both personal and business sustainability conversation begins and ends with value.  While there may be many paths, as is often said, “All roads lead to the same place”.  From our sustainability consulting perspective, that place is your definition of value.

•    Ongoing personal success and prosperity
•    Continued personal development and growth
•    Engagement and success of others
•    Health and continuous flourishing of the environment

When the concept of value is applied to specific areas of concern in current business processes and practices, sustainable action can be seen in tangible results. The realities of increased business risk, increased cost or the lost revenue, often further narrows the discussion of business sustainability pursuits.  Knowing where you want to go or what you hope to achieve is a pivotal first step.

The ability to transcend lagging ‘past performance’ business sustainability measures to a ‘pursued value’ direction can often differentiate an innovative organization from the rest of the pack.  By taking proactive measures, companies are already addressing future business sustainability risks and market changes that will directly impact business profitability.  With that being said, what is your value for sustainable action?
