The Landscape of Sustainability Standards and Credentials

Our professional consulting experience has revealed a number of reasons why business and individuals are seeking sustainability credentials.  These include:

  • Demonstration of responsible management
  • Defined and managed process improvements
  • Better relationships with supplier, customers, investor, and regulators
  • Marketing advantages
  • Improved company image and name

So where to begin?

Larger Organizations may be looking to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO): the world's principal voluntary standards development body.  Most commonly recognized for its ISO 9000 quality standards with over 350,000 companies registered , ISO recently launched its ISO 14000  certification series for adherence with environmental management standards.

Smaller businesses may be searching for something which better reflects their commitments.  As consultants providing small business resources, we often speak with clients about the value of Co-Op America.

Individuals can also seek their own personal knowledge and credentials.  Colleges and Universities across the country are responding to the desires of their students for sustainability programs.  In addition, private organizations like EarthRight Institute are offering training and certification to individuals.

A commitment to sustainability is a worthwhile pursuit.   Taiga Company encourages and provides support to individuals and businesses seeking sustainability knowledge, development, and certification.

Remember that there is a major new player in the international sustainability marketplace of professional institutes: the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (http://www.sustainabilityprofessionals.org). This is what a recent commentator on Linkedin had to say about it: "...the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) -- the world´s first and largest professional institute and certifying association for green professionals..... With founding members such as GreenBiz´s Joel Makower and Bob Doppelt and with sustainability courses taught by luminaries such as Alan AtKisson, Bob Willard, Hunter Lovins, and Marsha Willard, it´s no wonder ISSP has been getting so much attention lately."
