The Pursuit of Sustainability: Where to Get Started?

In our sustainability consulting, we work with businesses and individuals who have become motivated by a number of sustainability drivers, ranging from personal interests to business stakeholder requirements.  In a recent discussion with a company driven to meet growing customer expectations, we found this organization, like many, asking themselves where to begin and whose direction to follow.  Should external pressures or internal value drivers define the pursuit of sustainability?

At Taiga Company, we often find businesses and individuals reacting to short-term immediate requests for change at the expense of longer-term sustainable value.  While the sustainability journey doesn’t have to be a cumbersome process, the pursuit of personal or business sustainability is a continuous long-term commitment.  So the question is: where to begin?

Our professional consulting and network of small business resources work with clients to identify and address specific needs.  We guide clients through the development of sustainability programs that address the motivating factors in each sustainability pursuit, focusing first on internal value identification:

•    Engage with key stakeholders (e.g. friends, employees, customers) in the process.
•    Clearly define motivating and driving factors.
•    Clearly define the desired sustainability future.
•    Identify sustainable growth potential  relative to drivers.
•    Define the long-term value of sustainability.
•    Set a long-term vision for sustainability.

Working with a sustainability consultant, businesses and individuals can leverage specific knowledge and sustainability best practices to implement specific solutions that meet internal value drivers.  Establishing a focused approach will bring clarity and facilitate lasting results in the pursuit of personal or business sustainability.  A professional consultant can help break down a sustainability plan into manageable steps to ensure that the approach is aligned in with overall sustainability objectives.
