What’s the Green in Green Seals?

image: green seal productsThe recent growth in consumer eco awareness has sparked an ever increasing interest for green products and services.  The business world has responded with a wide variety of available green options.  This can sometimes be a little overwhelming, and green claims and reviews often leave consumers confused or mislead.

As a sustainability consultant, we spend considerable amount of time researching products and services.  We have come to the conclusion that there is almost always an alternative option available for individuals who desire a more sustainable lifestyle.   The key is to understand the green seal and certifications.

Environmental Leader recently ran an article on green restaurants.  The American National Standards Institute has approved the Green Seal Environmental Standard for Restaurants and Food Services.  It measures the impacts of food, energy and water use and related supplies.

In comparison the, a new food-labeling program called Smart Choices, backed by most of the nation’s largest food manufacturers, is designed to help shoppers easily identify smarter food and beverage choices.  While critics debate the health criteria, the label does not necessarily represent a greener choice.

Because there is a great deal of information and misinformation about environmentally friendly and socially responsible products/ services, many people can be confused. Although still developing, true eco-labels give credibility and confidence to assist the discerning eco conscious consumer.

In our daily living, we are presented with opportunities to expand our eco awareness and make informed choices.  Being conscious of sustainability concepts while we shop, work, play, and eat contributes to living a more sustainable lifestyle.   As a green living consultant, I encourage everyone to explore and adopt sustainable alternatives and share the information to inspire sustainable action in others.
