The web is full of information and advice on personal sustainability, and at times, it may seem overwhelming. A common question we receive from clients is: “Where do I begin?” The key is to link specific value to the implementation of a personal sustainability plan.In a recent post, Exploring the Value in Personal Sustainability, we defined some of the drivers, challenges, and big opportunities. Capitalizing on these value components in the pursuit of a more sustainable lifestyle is critical to the success of a personal sustainability plan. However, what works for one may not be the right fit for another.
An effective long-term personal sustainability plan involves more than implementing mainstream sustainability concepts into daily living. Personal sustainability is a continuous improvement process that challenges an individual to constantly expand personal eco awareness. In addition, individuals who experiment with different sustainability concepts can identify the practices that add specific value to their own life.
As a personal sustainability consultant, I have learned that each individual experience is unique and a single plan can not be universally applied. A personal sustainability plan should allow for a large degree of spontaneity. Individuals need to expand their eco awareness and experiment with new ideas. In my experience, motivated individuals can recognize and quickly respond to innovative ideas to capture untapped value specific to their own experience.
Remaining open to test new ideas and different strategies will often payoff in the long run and sometimes even equate to immediate success. By expanding personal eco awareness and keeping options open, individuals can identify and implement winning approaches.
As a sustainability consultant to small businesses and individuals, it is sometime hard to communicate the importance in ‘personalizing’ your plan. There is value in the knowledge gained from successful and unsuccessful experimentation.
At Taiga Company, our personal consulting work with clients to build sustainability plans that add value by expanding eco awareness, experimenting with sustainability concepts, and taking steps to implement actions that meet their specific sustainable lifestyle needs.
