On the second Sunday in May, American children of all ages treat their mothers to something special. It is the one day out of the year when children, young and old, try to show in a tangible way how much they appreciate their mothers.  Of course we think of our mothers on Mother's day, but as a sustainability consultant I remember Mother Earth on Mother's day as well.

According to BIGresearch, Americans will spend an average of $123.89 per person this Mother's Day.  With that being said, for those embracing eco awareness in a sustainable lifestyle, leverage your purchasing power  to show love for your Mother and for Mother Earth.

Here are some ideas to celebrate Mother's Day with eco awareness.

  • Cards: consider giving a handmade, heartfelt card made of recyclable materials.  Or, purchase a recycled card or send a free e-card from the World Wildlife Fund.

  • Buy local, organic flowers or visit Organic Bouquet for sustainable flowers and wreaths.

  • Prepare an organic breakfast or plan a picnic at an outdoor park including organic treats.

  • Does Mom love the kitchen?  GoodFibers offers natural and irresistible bamboo kitchen towels that are known for their quality as well as a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Mother's Day is the perfect opportunity to remember the simple gestures of love, respect, and appreciation with our Mothers and Mother Earth.
