Access to information has put consumer preferences for alternative products and services on the leading edge of business sustainability. In comparison to previous generations, sustainable products and services are not being brought to the consumer; so much as, the consumer is defining the products and services they want available in the market. This has placed pressures and expectations on business world to add environmental and social factors to their financial performance scorecards. The fact is that over the last 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in eco awareness, with a significant shift in the knowledge of the general public. The corresponding response of business has become increasingly visible in the market. Evidence of this shift can most easily be seen in the shear number of alternative products and services available to consumers today.
Despite the economic downturn, alternative product introductions to the marketplace continue to stay strong in 2009. A Boston Consulting Group survey reports, "The business case for green remains compelling, especially in a tough market. The continuing expansion of green consciousness around the world presents a huge opportunity for smart companies."
At the current rate, 2009 new product introductions will be triple those of 2008, which itself was twice 2007. Big retailers are among the leaders in promoting business sustainability. Overall ‘green’ sales at retailers, such as Wal-Mart and Costco, have seen sales growth increases up to 7 percent.
This massive surge in alternative products has expanded the general public’s eco awareness and created a mind shift towards alternative options. According to Environmental Leader, “Today’s companies recognize that corporate social responsibility practices contribute to brand recognition and brand loyalty”.
As a sustainability consultant, we believe that growing eco awareness and resulting pressure on business sustainability will dictate that sustainability remains a top priority for business success. It will ensure that ‘best-of-the-best’ products and services will continuously rise to the top. At Taiga Company, our eco friendly consulting encourages clients and peers to drive these changes in the market by exercising their vote in more sustainable purchases.
