In the U.S., the average grocery store's produce travels nearly 1,500 miles between the farm where it was grown and your refrigerator.  A tremendous amount of fossil fuel is burned to transport foods such long distances, releasing emissions and other pollutants that contribute to global climate change, acid rain, smog and air pollution.  In contrast, local and regional food systems produce 17 times less CO2.

Buying local is a sustainability concept practiced as part of living a sustainable lifestyle.  We explain in our sustainability consulting there are numerous environmental benefits to buying local.

Those already practicing a sustainable lifestyle are familiar with the difference local food makes.  Not only is it delicious, but it also supports improved health and nutrition, environmental stewardship, support for family farms and rural communities, and ensuring animal welfare.

However, buying local extends beyond that of food purchases.  Purchasing locally made products also supports sustainable businesses in our communities.  We encourage our clients to consider the additional benefits to buying local.

• Local businesses produce more income, jobs, and tax receipts for local communities.
For every $100 you spend at one of our local businesses, $68 will stay in the community .
• Local businesses are more likely to utilize local ads, banks and other services.
• Local businesses donate more money to nonprofits and are more accountable to their local communities.
• Supporting local businesses preserves the economic diversity of our communities and the unique character of our neighborhoods.
• Supporting local businesses is good for the environment, because it cuts down on fuel consumption.

Most of all, when shopping local, you are protecting the environment.  Support your local community, buy local.
